Latvian PM burning out?

I am back from Stockholm where I was invited to attend the Södertörn University Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) very well organized conference. In plane I read encouraging news about Riga Administrative Court staying firm and not dropping demands from political parties who illegaly overspent their election campaigns. The prime minister´s LPP/LC party must repay 528 870,01 lats into state treasury by December 13, 2008 deadline. This is the money LPP/LC overspent during the illegal election campaign in September 2006, and also People´s Party (TP) and Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) used the same tactics, thus being required to repay Ls 529 981 and Ls 11 626 accordingly.

Such demand would literally bankrupt LPP/LC party. At the same time and after the IMF insistence the PM was presenting his ideas about leading Latvia out of the economic crisis in the parliament. There he announced that the Latvian state must cut expenses for about another Ls 600mlj. In his official speech he announced that he wants to see real actions of all stakeholders by the December 19, 2008 deadline, because otherwise government might not be able to fulfill its obligations already in March 2009.

It seems that Ivars Godmanis probably takes his tasks too seriously. He does not have an experienced team to help him in his ordeal, if he even had to fall asleep in yesterday´s parliamentary session... .

Sveiks, Veiko!

Have you had the time to determine how significant a role Nils Melngailis will have in his role as head of Parex banka? Of course, the IMF will be relieved that they can interact with someone competent, as opposed to the eminently unqualified Slakteris, Bičevskis et al. But how much power will Melngailis truly have to affect LV's decisions about economic policy during this crucial period? As has been noted everywhere, there's a dearth of information about the extent of LV's economic collapse. Similarly, there's little indication about the effectiveness of the structure that's being created to pull LV out of the hole. Is it a 'dog and pony' show that the oligarchs are mounting for the IMF & the EU? Or are people like Melngailis actually being given power behind the scenes?

In other words: will Melngailis (and any other capable people getting deployed) solely need to know how to utilize the media in order to be effective, since they're just 'window-dressing' intended to please the IMF, EU et al?

Alright, fine.. Some nice facts and statistics you've got there. But as always- you're lacking any (meaning, You've got none at all) constructive solutions.
I'm afraid you're sliding towards majority of Latvians- everything's gone bad, so nobody's giving a damn.
Perhaps, there's a slight difference- You've been giving warnings all the time and had voted at a time. But saying that Godmanis is failing and his team is broke is no solution. So what would be the other way out- listening to the head of your beloved JL- Mr Kariņš, who recently suggested to sack all the government? Obviously, yours and Mr Karins's opinions suit each other, however they do not suit mine- in my opinion Godmanis (even though representing the clique) and his team should finish their job. And populism of Mr Kariņš is almost as good solution as letting the country to SC or some other pseudo communists.

Your critics are worthless, because there's no other way out. Any government at this stage would take the same steps- nationalizing banks, taking IMF loans and depreciating currency. When everything is gone bad owing to giblets within national elite, there is no art in taking previously mentioned steps- even party of seniors would choose to act the same way. So let them do their job and keep your loughs.

I think this is a great blog, and I would like to Post a Comment

There has been some recent news you might like to hear.Obama is making it better for us already! There has been an increase of money availability to everyone. Due to recession there is increased funding for all types of grants. Even lenders are bending over backwards to bail you out too. Regardless of statistics, there is people getting tons of cheap money for personal use, investments, start businesses, buy homes, pay off debt, and more. Bailout is for YOU

I am in İzmir now and whilst learning the extent of confusion in the government (contradıctory announcements plus calling for the national unity govnt.) indicates that with Nils Melngailis they want to get this bank business solved. Shall return to Riga and would learn more and write then

Calm down. There's no use of tracing or offending me.

All I'm saying is that there's hardly any solutions in your posts. Just cynical critic. Everybody's master in this. What's the massage of your recent post? LC will go bankrupt and PM is a lonely fool? Or that you're back from where you were? If you, re writing publicly- be ready to get publicly criticized.
So far you have responded to my personal characteristics that you think you know and invited me to leave. Is there anything that you'd like to say within context of your original topic? How about some words about my suggestion that there's obviously no alternatives (already for n years) to current leading clique? And if your shallow comments are compared to others don't get upset- make some qualitative suggestions.

But it's alright. No more me in your blog. Take care.
